---------------

What makes a city, a township, a community?

Is it the Macdonald’s off of PCH and Long Beach Blvd?
No.
Is it
Los Compadres?
Johnny Reb’s?
Jongwaard’s?
Crystal’s Thai-Cambodian?
Or
Pho Hung Phat?
It’s all of these and none of these – mixed together.
and the laughter that gather’s there.

We acknowledge that we are on the land of the Tongva/Gabrieleño and the Acjachemen/Juaneño Nations who have lived and continue to live here. We recognize the Tongva/Acjachemen Nations and their spiritual connection as the first stewards and the traditional caretakers of this land.

I wasn’t born in Long Beach.
But I spent a lifetime there.
I moved to long beach at the beginning of my 10th grade year of highschool.
And landed at Millikan Highschool
Living in a rented house
Off of spring street and palo verde avenue
Then an apartment on 3rd and Falcon.

My first few years in Long Beach
Saw me ride bikes to 4th street avenue
Buying records at VIP, Zed's and spots I don't remember the name of in North Long Beach
Going to shows at Toe Jam and Fender’s Ballroom
Skateboarding on streets, sidewalks, and curbs …while getting chased out of thrifties parking lots
Buying dickies across from pacific coast highway campus of long beach cc
Watching an up and coming sublime at parties in abandoned buildings
Slinging coffee at the coffee shack located on the grounds of the long beach museum of art
Watching allen ginsberg recite poetry in downtown
And then meeting him afterwards
Countless nights dancing at blue cafe
Managing the library coffee house
Trying to decide between thai or cambodian dinner at the half and half restaurant
Waiting in line for pho
Finding thrills driving up and down signal hill streets
And spending hours and hours perusing acres of books.
Long beach formed me.

Thoughts / Studio Notes
  • Homage to Willmore City, the original forerunner of Long Beach. The Willmore City township was developed by William E. Willmore on 4000 acres leased from Jotham Bixby and Rancho Los Cerritos in 1881. In 1884, the Rancho reclaimed the land for non-payment and resold the area to the Long Beach Land and Water Company.
  • Resurrection / resurgence / renaissance of the Long Beach / willmore area
  • Connected pieces, some fortified tied, and fixed with sweet feminine curtains.
  • More rectangles, more connections, more movement = more people.
